HabiJohn Foundation has supported the elderly in Mityana District, Uganda to form
Parish Elderly Groups (PEG) in which they will discuss issues affecting them and how
they can be handled through action.
PEG are weekly informed groups formed at parish level that are also made aware by the HF on their constitutional rights, transparency and accountability that they deserve from the public services they are entitled to. In these forums the elderly come together to discuss salient matters arising in their lives.
Parish Elderly Groups (PEG) have well established leaders among themselves and participate actively with the HF to lobby the government to get older people's rights recognised.
Existing human rights mechanisms in Uganda do not adequately protect the rights of the elderly.
